When was the last time you cleaned your roof shingles? Okay, we get it. Until now, you used to think that the roof doesn’t require major cleaning. Well, you are not the only one. Most homeowners don’t consider cleaning their roof shingles.
The reason why we neglect the roofing structure and everything related to it is that it is not in our direct site. We don’t see it every day – even though it is the most prominent thing in our house. Anyway, we are so lost in our thoughts and our daily activities that we completely forget about the thing over our head.
Like every other structure of your house, the roof requires proper maintenance. And since it is a part of the exterior of your house, it is important to pay attention to your roof maintenance. Your guests are most likely to form a not-so-great opinion of your house if they are invited to a house with unappealing exterior.
Now that we have made our case regarding why you should keep your roof shingles clean, we present you an easy guide to clean your house. However, before you carry out with your cleaning activity, it will be even better if you get your roof inspected by a professional to check for any leaks or damage. Once you are done with it, here is a step-by-step guide to clean roof shingles.
1. Make the Cleaner
It may sound a bit difficult, but this is an easy thing to do. Take a large container and mix hot water, detergent, and bleach. Wait until the soap granules dissolve and then pour the mixture into the garden sprayer. One thing that you should be careful about is the day you choose for the cleaning activity. Clean them on a cool day so that the mixture doesn’t dry off as soon as you apply it on the shingles.
2. Spray the Cleaner
Once the cleaner gets settled in the sprayer, take it up to the roof. Spray the cleaner on a section of the roof – be careful while spraying it and don’t cover the entire roof at one time. Ideally, the section chosen should be 3 ft high and 10 ft wide. Saturate the area and leave the cleaner on it for at least 15 minutes.
Cleaning roofs mean slippery surface. Therefore, to prevent any serious injury, you should always start the cleaning work from the lower section of the roof so that by the time you are cleaning the upper portion, you at least have the dry surface to stand on.
3. Scrub
After 15 minutes or so, take a broom to scrub the treated area. Keep the area wet until you are scrubbing. If you feel that the cleaner is drying, spray the cleaner a bit more.
4. Rinse the Area
Once the scrubbing is done, thoroughly rinse the area with the help of freshwater.
Summary
Cleaning roof shingles seems like a difficult task. But if you follow this guide, you will see how easily you will get done with the work.
