First determine what the opening damaged
A puncture can affect more than the visible covering. Inspection should determine whether it cut or displaced:
- Surface shingles, tile, panel, coating or membrane
- Underlayment or secondary membrane
- Insulation
- Roof deck or sheathing
- Rafters, trusses or other structural members
- Wiring, plumbing or mechanical components
- Interior ceiling and finishes
If the deck is soft, sagging or visibly fractured, keep people away from the area until it is evaluated.
Asphalt-shingle puncture repair
A professional shingle repair generally opens the field far enough to reach sound decking and intact underlayment.
The scope may include:
- Removing affected shingles without tearing surrounding courses
- Squaring the damaged deck area back to supported framing
- Installing compatible deck material with correct support and fastening
- Restoring underlayment with water-shedding laps
- Reinstalling matching shingles with manufacturer-approved fasteners and seal locations
- Checking whether the puncture is close enough to a valley, wall or penetration to require flashing work

Concrete or clay tile puncture repair
Tile must be lifted carefully to expose the underlayment and deck. A repair can involve replacement of broken pieces, underlayment patches with correct laps, deck work and restoration of battens or attachment.
Matching tile profile and color can be difficult on older roofs. The estimate should identify whether spare tile is available and how accidental breakage during access will be handled.
Do not walk across surrounding tile casually. Foot traffic can turn one puncture into a larger repair.
Metal-panel puncture repair
The right detail depends on panel type, seam design, substrate and whether the penetration will remain.
- An abandoned opening may require panel replacement or a manufacturer-compatible reinforced patch.
- A new permanent pipe or curb needs a purpose-designed flashing detail.
- Exposed-fastener and standing-seam systems use different attachments and movement details.
A rigid patch that blocks thermal movement or relies on incompatible sealant can create a larger failure later. Identify the exact panel system before specifying the repair.
Single-ply membrane puncture repair
TPO, PVC and EPDM repairs use compatible cleaned and prepared materials. The technician may need to remove contaminated or wet insulation, repair the deck and install a reinforced membrane patch with rounded corners and required seam dimensions.
A patch over wet insulation traps the problem. Moisture extent should be investigated before the membrane is closed.
Chemical compatibility matters. A product intended for one membrane should not be assumed safe for another.
Spray-foam roof puncture repair
Damaged coating and foam are cut back to dry, sound material. Compatible roofing foam is used to rebuild profile and drainage, followed by the required protective coating and reinforcement.
The repair should blend with surrounding slope instead of creating a bowl or raised dam. Exposed foam must not remain unprotected from ultraviolet light.
Openings around removed equipment need flashing design
Abandoned vents, coolers, skylights and rooftop units often leave curbs or framed openings. The project may involve framing and deck reconstruction, insulation, air-sealing and a roof-system repair—not merely covering the top.
If new equipment replaces the old unit, coordinate curb height, drainage, service clearance and who owns the flashing warranty.
Safety controls come before the detail
OSHA's roof-repair guidance requires evaluating structural integrity and fall hazards before work. It also distinguishes protective covers for openings from permanent weatherproof roof repair.
Homeowners should document the damage and protect the interior from a safe location. Wet roofing, damaged decking and uncertain anchors make improvised roof access dangerous.
How to compare repair proposals
Ask each contractor:
- Which layers were damaged?
- How far will the roof be opened?
- How will deck edges be supported?
- Which compatible underlayment, membrane or coating is used?
- Will wet insulation be removed?
- Is matching surface material available?
- How are concealed changes priced?
- What photographs document the completed layers?
