5Ways to De-Ice Your Roof

Winter is one of the most awaited times of the year. The magic of snow and ice can leave you spellbound and relax you even during the most stressful times of your life.

But the magical season often comes with snowstorms, which leads to snow and ice accumulation on your roof. Due to its weight, snow and ice can damage your roof and cause leaks.

If snow and ice accumulation is a typical winter concern, it is essential to clear it off. While it is always best to call a professional for this job, you can try these five ways to de-ice your roof.

#1. Use Snow Rake

The simplest way to de-ice your roof is to use a snow rake. As soon as you notice snow formations on your roof, identify all the areas of your roof that are affected by snow. Make sure you check the down sprouts, edges, and gutters. Once you have identified areas with ice accumulation, gently scrape off snow using a snow rake.

When using a snow rake, make sure you don’t stand on the roof surface or a ladder. Instead, it is best to stand on the floor to reduce the risk of slip or fall.

#2. Use Warm Water

The second and perhaps the simplest way to de-ice your roof is to use warm water. While it is useful, it may be a temporary solution to the problem. All you have to do is to pour warm water directly on the ice formation until it melts. Make sure you take necessary precautions when handling warm or hot water.

#3. Place a Fan

Another easy way to get rid of ice formations on your roof is to place a fan in the attic area. With constant airflow, you can get rid of concentrated ice formations.

#4. Apply Commercially Available Ice-Melting Products

You can also de-ice your roof using commercially available ice melting products. Products containing chemicals such as calcium magnesium acetate and ammonium sulfate can be very effective in de-icing your roof.

When applying chemicals to de-ice your roof, make sure you never use salt on your roof. While salt is generally safe for your roof shingles, it can be highly corrosive for the nails holding your shingles, so it may eventually damage your roof.

#5. Call a Professional

With the above-mentioned methods, you can de-ice your roof, but that does not eliminate the need for a professional roofing company. Roofing experts know how to de-ice your roof, but they also ensure that your roof stays in good condition for long regardless of the weather. So it is always best to call a professional roofing company at least once during the winter season.
