Slope is usually written as rise over run

Roof slope is commonly expressed as rise:12:

  • 2:12 rises two inches for each 12 inches of horizontal run
  • 4:12 rises four inches for each 12 inches of horizontal run
  • 12:12 rises 12 inches for each 12 inches of horizontal run

The units can change as long as rise and run use the same unit. The second number is horizontal run, not the length measured along the roof surface.

Why “pitch” can be confusing

Historically, pitch can describe roof rise relative to the building's total span, while slope describes rise relative to run. In everyday roofing work, people commonly use both words for the rise:12 ratio.

Avoid arguing over the noun. Put the actual ratio in the inspection, drawing and proposal.

Ratio, percentage and angle are different formats

The same plane can be described as:

  • A rise-to-run ratio
  • A percentage grade
  • An angle in degrees

Do not copy a number from one format into another without conversion. Roofing codes and product instructions in the United States commonly use the rise-over-12 format.

The angle formula is:

angle = arctangent(rise ÷ run)

A digital level or roof-measurement tool may report degrees, while a manufacturer detail calls for a ratio. Record both only when the conversion is verified.

Measure every distinct roof plane

A building can contain:

  • A main gable or hip roof
  • Lower-pitch porch roofs
  • Patio additions
  • Dormers
  • Dead valleys
  • Low-slope transitions
  • Equipment platforms

Do not average them into one building-wide number. A porch plane may fall below the minimum for the material used on the main house.

A roof plan should label each distinct slope and show where systems transition.

Common ways to obtain the slope

From plans or prior records

Construction drawings may state slope, but field changes and later additions can differ. Verify critical planes before ordering or specifying work.

From an accessible attic

A level and rise measurement can sometimes be taken against framing without stepping onto the roof. Attic access still requires care around insulation, wiring and unsupported ceiling areas.

From the roof surface

A qualified roofer can measure the plane during inspection using appropriate access and fall protection.

From aerial or digital measurement

Remote reports can support estimating, but small additions, curved surfaces, hidden transitions and recent changes may need field verification.

Slope does not approve a material by itself

A measured ratio is an input. Product eligibility also depends on the exact roofing assembly, underlayment, seam or lap design, deck and manufacturer instructions.

For example, IRC Section R905.2.2 sets a model-code minimum for asphalt shingles and adds underlayment requirements in a lower-slope band. IRC Section R905.10.2 distinguishes qualifying standing-seam metal systems from lapped panels with different seam conditions.

Slope factor and roof area

The horizontal footprint is smaller than the surface area of a sloped roof. Estimators use the measured roof planes or a slope factor to calculate actual surface area.

Do not multiply the home's floor area by one generic percentage. Overhangs, attached garages, porches, hips, valleys and different slopes change the total.

What belongs in a roofing proposal

A useful proposal should identify:

  1. Measured roof area
  2. Slope of each relevant plane
  3. Material and complete assembly
  4. Low-slope transition treatment
  5. Underlayment and flashing
  6. Access and staging assumptions
  7. Waste and geometry assumptions
  8. Deck-repair allowance or unit pricing

“Four-twelve roof” is not a complete scope, but omitting slope makes material and labor comparisons weaker.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring along the roof instead of horizontal run
  • Calling degrees a rise:12 ratio
  • Using one slope for every plane
  • Treating “metal” as one assembly with one minimum
  • Assuming tile or shingles can extend onto a low-slope porch unchanged
  • Pricing from floor area alone
  • Confusing roof form—gable, hip or shed—with roof slope
